Does Your Child Have an Attention Problem or a Vision Problem? A Palatine Parent’s Checklist

When a child loses their place while reading, struggles to finish homework, avoids close-up work, or has difficulty staying focused in class, parents may naturally wonder about an attention problem. However, some of these behaviors can also occur when a child's visual system is not working efficiently.

October is ADHD Awareness Month, making it an important time for Palatine parents to understand that ADHD and functional vision problems are different conditions, although some symptoms can overlap. A child can also have both. A functional vision evaluation can help determine whether visual skills are contributing to difficulties with reading, schoolwork, or sustained attention.

When Attention and Vision Problems Look Alike

Clear eyesight is only one part of functional vision. Children also need their eyes and brain to work together efficiently when reading, writing, copying from the board, playing sports, and completing other visual tasks.

A child with an undetected vision problem may appear distracted because keeping words clear, following lines of print, or processing visual information requires extra effort. This does not mean a vision problem causes ADHD or that vision therapy treats ADHD. Instead, identifying a visual problem can help families understand whether vision is contributing to some of the behaviors they are seeing.

A Vision Checklist For Palatine Parents

Consider scheduling a functional vision evaluation if your child frequently experiences signs such as:

•          Losing their place, skipping words, or using a finger to keep their place while reading

•          Seeing double, closing one eye, or becoming uncomfortable during near work, which may indicate convergence problems

•          Complaining that words become blurry or having trouble shifting focus between near and far objects

•          Having difficulty smoothly tracking words across a page or following moving objects

•          Missing information in their peripheral vision or seeming unusually unaware of their surroundings

•          Struggling to recognize, remember, organize, or interpret visual information

These behaviors alone do not diagnose ADHD or a functional vision disorder. They are signs that additional evaluation may be worthwhile.

Understanding Convergence, Focusing, and Tracking Problems

Convergence allows the eyes to turn inward together for close work. Focusing helps keep print clear, while eye tracking allows the eyes to move accurately from word to word and line to line. When these skills are inefficient, reading and homework can become tiring and frustrating.

Peripheral vision also plays an important role in spatial awareness and navigating the environment. Visual processing goes a step further by describing how the brain organizes and interprets information received through the eyes.

What A Functional Vision Evaluation Can Reveal

A standard vision screening may determine whether a child can see clearly, but it may not thoroughly evaluate all of the visual skills required for learning. At Vision Rehabilitation Associates, our functional vision evaluations can assess eye teaming, focusing, tracking, central and peripheral vision, visual-spatial skills, processing speed, visual memory, and other aspects of visual processing.

How Vision Therapy Can Help

If we identify a functional vision problem, vision therapy may be part of the solution. Vision therapy uses doctor-directed activities designed to develop and improve specific visual skills, including eye teaming, focusing, tracking, and visual processing. For Palatine families wondering whether a child's school struggles may have a visual component, a detailed evaluation can provide valuable answers and help determine the appropriate next steps.

Schedule a functional vision evaluation with Vision Rehabilitation Associates to learn whether convergence, focusing, tracking, peripheral vision, or visual processing problems may be contributing to your child’s reading, learning, or attention difficulties.
